Chicken Skin On Your Arms? It Could Be Keratosis Pilaris

If the skin on the back of your arms looks like the skin on a chicken, you may have a skin condition called keratosis pilaris. This is a condition where the hair follicle becomes plugged up with dead skin cells, leaving behind a bump that can be itchy, and you may even have some redness around the area of the hair follicle. You may also have this condition on your buttocks, cheeks, or your upper thighs as well. To help treat this condition, you should seek help from your dermatologist to be sure this is what you do in fact have. Read on for a few things you can also try at home to try and soothe your skin.

Remove The Dead Skin Cells

Remove the dead skin cells by either dry brushing the skin, or you can also use a loofah to remove the dead skin cells while in the shower. When removing the dead skin cells, do so very gently so you aren't breaking the skin at all and causing injury to your skin. If you are dry brushing, do so in long, even strokes. If you are using a loofah, use a natural loofah instead of a plastic one, as it can be more beneficial in removing dead skin cells.

Use Lotion To Keep Your Skin Hydrated

Your skin needs to stay hydrated, and sometimes, it needs a little extra help to stay hydrated. Using lotion is one way to keep your skin hydrated. Use thicker lotions that help hold in the moisture in your skin. Rub the lotion into your skin immediately after you shower or bathe and throughout the day as well if needed when you notice your skin is dry. Another way to keep your skin hydrated is to drink water. Drinking water can help keep your skin nourished and hydrated.

Use Warm Water When Showering

Make sure you are using warm water when showering to prevent your skin from drying out too much with the hot water. If you take baths, don't spend too much time soaking in the water to prevent drying out your skin as well.

Wear Loose-Fitting Clothing

Wear clothing that isn't too tight on the skin and wear natural fabrics such as cotton. Other types of fabrics may cause irritation to your skin. Tight clothing may also rub against your skin too much and could lead to ingrown hairs or could rub against the bumps and lead to irritation.

If your skin is starting to resemble chicken skin, it could be keratosis pilaris. Talk to your dermatologist about your skin and about treatments for your skin.
